Dreaming of chocolate? Chocolate dreams have become a reality for KK’s Bundt Cakes in Arroyo Grande. The bakery has been getting a “bigger piece of the pie” all year, thanks to the help of San Luis Obispo-based Elements Inc., an interactive web agency, who added the perfect blend of charm and function to KK’s new web site.
Even during economically challenging times, KK’s has seen consistent company growth shortly after the web site went live in December 2008. “During the first quarter of 2009 sales were up 10.5 percent compared to the first quarter of ’08, which is amazing considering the recession,” explained KK’s owner, Karen Phillips (a.k.a. KK).
“The site is very professional and easy to use, and it certainly has helped us to define our vision – We are positioning ourselves as professionals more than ever before, and our sales show this,” she continued.
KK first started making bundt cakes for friends and family from her home 20 years ago, using a coveted “secret” recipe shared with her by a friend. As requests for her moist and delicious specialty cakes rose dramatically during the last seven years of working from her home, she decided it was time to officially set up shop in November 2006.
A family run business, KK, her three daughters, husband (on the weekends) and a family friend/baker now whip up 32 types of specialty bundt cakes – think Cherry Cheese Cake, Luscious Lemon and Butter Rum- at a quaint commercial location on Grand Avenue. For those who can’t resist starting their day on a sweet note, KK’s also tantalizes with a few morning bakery items such as muffins, croissants, and cinnamon pull-a-parts, along with specialty coffees and teas. And with loyal customers far and wide, cakes are delivered everywhere, from down the street to across the nation.
“I sometimes miss the simple days of just having a hobby, but the growth has been fun, and it’s so rewarding to have customers return again and again because of our excellent customer service and great products. Plus I love working with all my girls and my husband – we are a great team together!” exclaimed KK.
Once in her new location, KK realized she needed a proficient and professional web site to reflect the engaging French country charm that the storefront conveys, along with a bit of mouthwatering temptation.
“Because we have a perishable product, it is important that the entire sales process moves quickly, and we needed a web site that would facilitate that,” said KK. In fall 2008, she retained Elements Inc. to create the site, after receiving numerous referrals from other business owners who were satisfied with the web agency.
According to Karen, within a couple of days after sitting down at the store to sip coffee and share cake with Elements’ president Jeremy LaDuque, the agency provided her with creative web site concepts that were frosting on the cake. Added KK, “They just nailed it! The web site conveys a warm, French Country look, just like we wanted.”
Now if only they could sprinkle a little magic dust so web viewers could take an actual bite out of the sumptuous cakes directly from the site!
