SEO or “SEF”?

by Brandon

Ran across this phrase & thought it had a couple of different play on meanings that could apply to Elements.

SEF – “Search Engine Friendly”, User optimized.

The context might be a little different, but here is the statement.

“Whilst I do get the idea of SEO, I pretty much agree with what you say. I always try and build sites so they are ‘SEF’ – or Search Engine Friendly. I.e. proper mark-up, decent headings, browser titles, and structure. Apart from that, I think decent content will do just a good a job, if not better, than an SEO chap can do.”

SEF! I think that’s a great way of looking at it. “My site is search-engine-friendly but user-optimized.”

One Response to “SEO or “SEF”?”

  1. Jennifer Says:

In my definition, I would say that Google is focused on being a giant index of information. Therefore it is inherently is looking for the most content possible that is also organized in the best possible way –- meaning, a way in which it can find information more efficiently to be able to supply it to more people in the most efficient way. And by the most efficient way, I mean a way in which it can figure out what the person is most likely looking for based on the keywords they type into the search field.

That is why Google SEO has been changing and has been becoming more focused on both KEYWORDS and proper set up of things like the website title code, the meta descriptions, the H1 tags (which are essentially the equivalent of a Chapter Headings if a website were a book) that would be used for a heading on a webpage right above a body of content. If you know how to format your online ‘book’ correctly, then the librarian called Google will reward you. You can also see why CONTENT would be just as equally as important. Google wants to be an information hub of quality a collection of random and disorganized websites that you have to spend hours navigating through to find what you want.

From what I see Google is attempting to better connect the ability to educate people and run commerce on a world-wide scale using the internet and to accomplish that goal they are requiring all us people to become smarter with our indexing and our business structures if we truly want to succeed. You’re only as great as the amount of detail in life that you pay attention to.

I don’t know much about Bing and the other competiting Search Engines criteria other than they would likely attempt to create a new organizational coding/index system and would likely then use that to generate a new marketing campaign angle in which to hook business owners who aren’t currently getting great results in Google. Namely, by offering a substitute product that offers another competitive way for any company to gain a share of their market. So if your site isn’t doing well in Google because you never took the time to learn about SEO/SEF specifics -– and really who would if they weren’t a designer, programmer or small business owner whose dabbled in building a website? –- then Bing may come by and say, “Hey you’ve seen our ads on TV, why don’t you come rank high on our search engine. We use a different criteria than Google does. On our pages you’ll have higher potential.”

Whether or not that is totally true, or by what methods rival search engines of Google use to prioritize information, I do not know. And if anybody does, please feel free to explain any high potential results you may know of in Yahoo!, Bing and other search engines.

Our goal at Elements is to continue to learn about as many of these Search Engine indexing trends as they arrive and change with our main focus on whichever search engines the most online users are searching with.
